What should I bring?

From important documents to luggage and gadgets – here's a guide of what you should pack, including our pre-departure checklist.

Important documents

Organise before you travel

When you go through immigration and border security at the airport, you will be asked to show your passport and other important documents. Please make sure you have the following readily available:

  • a valid passport (with at least six months until the expiry date)
  • your student visa (or a print out of your visa grant notification letter)
  • your Letter of Offer from Eynesbury College
  • your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) issued by Eynesbury College
  • proof of payments e.g. receipts for program fees, Overseas Student Healthcare Cover, bank statement etc
  • evidence of insurance policies e.g. travel and health insurance
  • original or certified copies of your academic transcripts (school, university) and qualifications (including evidence of your English language proficiency)
  • copy of your letter confirming accommodation arrangements and airport reception/transfer service (if applicable)
  • other identification e.g. birth certificate or driver’s licence
  • medical and optical records, doctors’ reports/certificates and/or prescriptions (if applicable)
  • a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW), if you’re under 18.

Tips:

  • Keep documents in your carry-on luggage, not in checked baggage.

Packing your luggage

What to Bring and What to Avoid

When packing your luggage you need to make sure to check which items you are NOT allowed to bring to Australia. Students are often surprised by how strict the Australian Border Force can be. If you’re in doubt about whether your goods are prohibited or not, declare them anyway on the Incoming Passenger Card which you will receive on the plane. Find out more about what you can bring.

  • Prohibited Items: No fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds, meat, or wood products.
  • Clean Items: Ensure footwear and sporting equipment are dry and soil-free.
  • Luggage Allowances: Typically 1 checked bag (20kg) and 1 carry-on (7kg) for international flights. Check with your airline.

Packing Tips:

  • You can buy most items in Australia, so avoid overpacking heavy or unnecessary items, such as multiple batteries, toiletries, medicines, cooking utensils and stationery.
  • Clothing: Casual attire is common at Eynesbury. Pack for the season: summer (light clothing) or winter (warm clothing and blankets).

Hand Luggage Essentials:

  • Warm jacket (winter) or light jacket (summer)
  • Toiletries
  • Cash in Australian dollars in case you have any problems with your credit or debit cards on your arrival. You will be able to set up a banking account once you arrive in Australia
  • Electrical adapter (240V)

Phones, laptops and tablets

Important information

If you are bringing a mobile phone from home, make sure that it’s unlocked and not restricted to your home network or country. You can then purchase an Australian SIM card to insert into your phone. SIM cards can be purchased at the airport or from a range of outlets including post offices, supermarket chains, petrol stations and mobile phone company stores.

Most mobile phone companies in Australia will allow you to purchase a pre-paid SIM card. Alternatively, you can sign up to a long-term contract and pay after each month of use.

If you are bringing a new laptop or tablet with you, we recommend that you have a receipt or other proof of purchase with you to avoid paying import duties.

If you plan to buy a laptop or tablet in Australia, find yourself a student deal. Eynesbury students may be eligible for educational discounts offered by hardware and software vendors, such as Apple or Lenovo. Please visit the vendors websites, or contact the vendor, to take advantage of these deals.

Students have access to computer and printer facilities at Eynesbury College
